NVivo 9 Server Fact Sheet

This document provides an overview of NVivo Server 9 – it contains the facts about licenses, trial versions, the purchasing process and software delivery.

Combining NVivo 9 with NVivo Server 9 will allow team members to work in the same project at the same time. Organizations and teams will be able to work with projects stored on a server, which also means they’re working with virtually unlimited volumes of data in a secure environment.

Licensing overview

• Customers who wish to use NVivo Server must purchase both the NVivo Server software, and NVivo 9 software. Each potential user will need NVivo 9 installed on their computer (perpetual or time-limited) in order to access projects via the Server version, which is installed on the customer’s server.

• There are two components to an NVivo Server license – the CPU component and CALs.

What is a CPU license?

• NVivo Server is installed on the customer’s server. Every server has a number of processors or central processing units’ (CPUs), with a minimum of one. Customers must purchase one CPU license for every CPU that the Server product will run on.

• Example 1: XYZ Organization will be installing NVivo Server onto one server which has dual (two) CPUs. Therefore, they will need to buy two CPU licenses.

What is a CAL?

• A CAL is a ‘client access license’.

• One CAL permits one user (named) to access NVivo 9 projects on the server.

• Three CALs permit one concurrent user (or ‘floating’ or unnamed user) to access NVivo 9 projects on the server.

• Example 2: XYZ Organization has three market researchers that must have guaranteed access to NVivo Server projects at all times. So they require three ‘named’ users.

They also have a large product development team that periodically undertakes customer research. While there are 20 members in this team, only three people need to work with NVivo Server projects at any given time.

So they also require three concurrent (or unnamed) users. Therefore, in addition to two CPU licenses (see example 1), this organization will need the following CALs:

Three named users = 3 CALs
Three concurrent (unnamed) users = 3 x 3 CALs = 9 CALs
They need a total of 12 CALs

• Example 3: University ABC would like all students from the Nursing faculty to be able to work with NVivo Server projects. While there are 100 students in this faculty, only 10 students need to be able to work with NVivo Server projects at any given time. Therefore, in addition to their CPU license(s), the University will need the following CALs:

10 concurrent (unnamed) users = 10 x 3 CALs = 30 CALs
They need a total of 30 CALs

License keys

• When a customer purchases NVivo Server 9, they will initially receive one license key for this software. This license key is ‘customized’ for each customer and is enabled only for the number of CPU licenses and CALs purchased.

• A customer will also receive separate license(s) for their NVivo 9 ‘desktop’ software (which is purchased separately).

• If a customer adds an extra processor to the server that NVivo Server is installed on for example, they will need to purchase an additional or ‘supplementary’ CPU license.

• If a customer would like to provide more users with access to NVivo Server projects, they will need to purchase additional or ‘supplementary’ CALs.

• Again, the ‘supplementary’ license key is ‘customized’ for each customer and is enabled only for the number of CPU licenses and CALs purchased in the same order.

Buying NVivo Server 9

• NVivo Server can only be purchased as a perpetual license.

• Time limited licenses will be available for NVivo Server trials.

• NVivo Server is only available as a boxed copy on a DVD. It is not available for download.

• Comprehensive information will be provided with NVivo Server packages including the number of CPU licenses and CALs initially provided, an ‘Installation and Setup Guide’ and terms and conditions for usage.
