NVivo for Mac

Released in June 2014, NVivo 10 for Mac helps you to easily organize and analyze content from interviews, focus groups, observations and literature.

Please note that if you’re familiar with NVivo for Windows, be aware that NVivo for Mac doesn’t contain all the same features as NVivo for Windows – further features will be developed over time.

NVivo for Mac includes all the features and functionality of NVivo for Mac Beta, plus more!
Using NVivo for Mac you can:

  • Work with qualitative content in the form of documents, PDFs, and audio and video media
  • Create, edit, import and work with audio and video transcripts
  • Gather all your material about a theme, idea or topic through ‘coding’
  • Use colored highlighting and coding stripes to display coding visually
  • Create memos to capture your ideas
  • Assign demographic attributes and exchange them with tools such as IBM SPSS Statistics
  • Explore your data, test theories and make discoveries using text search queries and coding queries
  • Identify themes with word frequency queries
  • Organize your data using folders and sets
  • Work with data in virtually any language

We’ll continue to add new functionality based on your feedback. We plan to further support your work by adding datasets, annotations, matrix coding queries, NCapture, and more. These features will become available via regular free software updates in the coming months.

Using NVivo for Windows?
NVivo projects can be exchanged between NVivo 10 for Windows and NVivo for Mac. To do this, ensure you're using the latest version of NVivo 10 for Windows.

NVivo 10 for Windows will operate on an Intel-based Macintosh (Mac) computer using one of the following software products:

Apple Boot Camp (Boot Camp is included in the latest Mac OS X version)
Parallels Desktop for Mac
VMware Fusion

These software products allow users to install Windows on a Mac and switch between both Mac and Windows operating systems. Once Windows has been installed, you will then be able to install NVivo 10 for Windows.

When utilizing Boot Camp, the system requirements specified for NVivo 10 for Windows should be met. When using Parallels Desktop for Mac or similar products that emulate the operating system, you may require system specifications set higher than those detailed by QSR. This is because these emulation programs require resources for the Mac operating system plus additionally assigned resources for Windows. Please refer to your emulation software vendor for further information on operational specifications.

Please note that NVivo 10 for Windows will not operate on Mac computers that use Microsoft Virtual PC. This is due to the latest version of Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac 7.0 emulating a Pentium II processor. NVivo 10 requires a 1.2 GHz Pentium III-compatible processor (32 bit) or 1.4 GHz Pentium 4-compatible processor (64-bit) or later due to the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 component utilized.

Alternatively, Mac OS X users can also use NVivo 10 for Windows via Citrix XenApp or Citrix XenDesktop.

Note While NVivo 10 for Windows can operate on a Mac under the conditions outlined above, the Mac platform is not formally supported by QSR for NVivo 10 for Windows. We will however apply our best efforts when troubleshooting technical issues that may arise. Thank you.
